Scriptures in Use needs partners, like you, to help support the fieldworkers to train local believers to tell and retell stories from the Bible in remote and hard to reach places of the world. You can be part of a global movement that is spreading God’s love and forgiveness around the globe using storytelling.

Welcome to Scriptures in Use

Scriptures in Use is reaching out to the hard places of the world. Places where the message of Jesus has never been heard. Places where cultural and linguistic barries have isolated people from the transforming message of Jesus Christ. SIU has developed powerful and effective methods to communicate through storytelling the great narratives of the Bible. Through dramatizations of the parables of Jesus and cultural adaptations of Scripture in Song, every believer is taught to become a Bible storyteller through which they become natural disciple makers and a trainers.

Reaching the Unreached through The Culture of Storytelling

  • There are an estimated 5.7 billion people who are oral learners.  This includes 3 billion adults, 900 million very young children, and 450 million children between the ages of eight and fifteen; all of these have basic or below basic literacy skills.  They are oral learners because of their limited literacy skills.
  • In the progress bars shown below are the percentage of still unreached people groups; you can see there is still much work to be done in Asia and Africa.
Asia 71.7 %
Africa 24.6 %
South America 6.6 %

Scriptures In Use Founders: Carla and Jim Bowman

Jim and Carla Bowman chartered Scriptures In Use as a non-profit in October of 1986, after three years of short term mission trips to Mexico. Once they had raised enough support, they officially started Bridges training in July of 1987. Working out of their home, they recruited others to join their storytelling movement. Over the past 30 years, SIU has become a leader in communicating the Bible orally thru storytelling, headquartered in Green Valley, Arizona. The Bowmans developed five separate curricula and tens of thousands have come to know Christ as a result.  Jim and Carla Bowman are currently enjoying retirement and continue to serve the Lord in many ways.

Kent Kiefer, Executive Director & CEO Scriptures In Use

    storytelling

Kent comes to us with 12 years of International Ministry experience, most recently four years with a faith-based International Missions’ Sending Agency (ABWE) and previously eight years with a faith-based International Parachurch ministry (Focus on the Family). Kent has a heart and passion for “reaching the unreached” and believes strongly that the oral arts/communication bridges training approach designed specifically for the indigenous men and women of peace around the world is one of the most effective means to reach the nations with the Gospel.

Since joining the team in February 2015, and seeing the God stories that come out of the field, I feel confident that He is at work in the hard to reach / least reached places of His World. My heart has been broken, I have laughed, I have cried and I have witnessed first hand the effectiveness of the Bridges Curriculum. I embrace the challenge He has given me in facilitating Scriptures In Use into the future.

Praising Him,

Kent
