Singing to the Lord

The Fiji Men’s Rugby team, against all odds, won the first ever Olympic Gold for their country in a Rugby sporting venue, which Fiji has not participated in seen since the 1924 Summer Olympic Games held in Paris. Most noteworthy, the seven Fiji players gathered together to celebrate and honor the Lord with a song sang in beautiful harmony.  As all of the media surrounded them and filmed them in the midst of their tearful celebration singing in both their native, mother-tongue of Fijian and English, the words rang out loud and true:

We have overcome,

We have overcome,

By the blood of the Lamb,

And the Word of the Lord,

We have overcome.

How does this story relate to Scriptures In Use?

Especially relevant, just like these joy-filled men from Fiji, many of our national grassroots participants who attend our “Bridges” training events around the world, will take the Bible stories they have recently memorized/learned and put those to dance, drama and song.  It’s quite an experience to see first-hand. The process comes naturally to them, having passed much of their history and knowledge from one generation to the next in the form of “song and dance”.

Furthermore this recent story also reminds me of how King David broke out in dancing and singing as the Ark of the Lord entered the City of David (2 Samuel 6:14-15 NIV):

14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

In conclusion, I want to celebrate like that!  No holding back and full of the joy of the Lord.  If you have a chance to watch the Fiji men’s video celebration on YouTube on NBC or other media venue, please do so as it is something you will not forget. You just might find yourself singing along “in the joy of the Lord”.
